5010 Non Specific Procedure Code Requirements

Providers and billing staff need to be aware of the 5010 requirement for the use of non-specific procedure codes.  PROCEDURE Codes that use any of the following words in their description MUST include a corresponding description of that service:

• Not Otherwise Classified (NOC)
• Unlisted
• Unspecified
• Unclassified
• Other
• Miscellaneous
• Prescription Drug Generic
• Prescription Drug, Brand Name

Claims that are submitted without this requirement are not HIPAA compliant.
