The Increased Specificity in ICD-10-CM means documentation must more specific to accommodate the complications and combinations used.

The diabetes mellitus codes are combination codes that include the type of diabetes mellitus, the body system affected, and the complications affecting that body system.

The final list of the new ICD-10- CM codes that become effective October 1, 2016 has been released. There are approximately 1600 changes to the code set, making up for the four years the ICD-10- CM codes have not had a complete update. For fiscal year (FY) 2017, updates to the 2017 ICD-10- CM gynecology codes include more detailed codes, laterality, revision of postprocedural and other complications, such as problems with genitourinary implants and prostheses.

For FY 2017, many changes have occurred in the ‘O’ Chapter, which consists of codes for the antepartum (first, second, and third trimesters), intrapartum and postpartum (puerperium] - 6 weeks after delivery) periods of a pregnancy.

Influenza in ICD-10-CM is classified in the following categories:

  • J09 Influenza due to certain identified influenza viruses – this includes the following types:

o   Avian

o   Bird

o   A/H1N1

o   Swine

o   Other influenza of animal origin (not bird/not swine)

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a common heart condition that exists in many patients. In ICD-9-CM coding, this was reported with code428.0. In ICD-10-CM, if only CHF or congestive heart failure is documented, it would be reported with I50.9 Heart failure, and would not reflect the true extent of the patients’ condition.
